Assorted questions that I get frequently. If I don't address yours here, please ask me .
Where is Eudora? Eudora is a very small town in Kansas. Think "Mayberry" but less progressive. However, I'm very close to Lawrence, home of the University of Kansas, and less than an hour away from Kansas City. In other words, civilization is just a hop in the car away.
Do you do this full-time? Yes. I have been a full-time freelancer since January, 2000. I very much like working for myself.
Do you work from home? Yes. I don't own any bunny slippers, though. But I think they'd be cool.
Did you draw the pictures for your site? For the most part, no. Many of the images you see here are digital photo manipulations. The drawings in my portfolio, however, are my own illustrations.
Since you do web hosting, does that mean you have a web server in your house? No. Hosted sites are physically located in a well-staffed data center in Texas. You don't have to be a web design client to sign up for hosting.
Is that your silhouette on your logo? Yes, it's a self-portrait. And yes, my hair really does look like that, more or less.
I want to start my own web design business. Can you give me some advice? See my article with tips for wannabes to read what I have to say on the subject, and/or review any of my articles. While I appreciate your emails and absolutely love hearing from you, please understand that I simply cannot provide free, individualized coaching for aspiring web professionals.
Would you like to hire me to do subcontracting work for you? I'm sorry, but I am not seeking subcontractors at this time. Best of luck to you!
What happens if you go out of business? One common concern when working with independent professionals is worry that individual may someday go out of business. Selecting a web shop may feel like a safer decision, although it's false sense of securitybusinesses close, too. However, if circumstances ever require me to change direction, I will call on my network of professional contacts to make sure my clients are well-cared for. I appreciate my clients' faith in me, and I want to see them looked after, whether it's by me or someone else.
I'm an aspiring web designer. Do you have a sample contract I can use? Sure. Because I had a sample contract posted in my "Terms" section for some time, this site often comes up in searches for "sample web design contracts." I don't take credit for actually writing the contract myself, as I combined material and ideas from several other sample contracts and adapted it for my needs, which I suggest you do as well. Please note: I did NOT hire an attorney to review this contract (although I used a version of it for working with Kansas Legal Services, so evidently it was deemed acceptable to a room full of lawyers at some point). Regardless, however, I take NO responsibilty whatsoever for the legality of this contract and/or how you use it. If that works for you, you may download the sample web development contract here.
